Understanding NHS Eye Care - Who Qualifies and What’s Covered
When it comes to eye care in the UK, the NHS provides valuable support to those in need, however, understanding the specifics of what’s covered, who qualifies, and how much you may need to pay can often be confusing.
We’ve put together a handy breakdown of NHS eye care services, including how you can maximise your benefits whether you’re eligible for additional NHS support or not.
NHS Eye Care Exemptions: are you eligible?
The NHS provides free sight tests and, for some individuals, help with the cost of spectacles and contact lenses. There are two main categories of NHS eye care support:
- Sight Test Only Exemption: Individuals in this group are entitled to a free NHS-funded sight test, but must cover the cost of spectacles or contact lenses themselves.
- Sight Test and Optical Voucher Exemption: In addition to a free NHS sight test, individuals in this group can receive an NHS optical voucher. This voucher contributes towards the cost of glasses or contact lenses, reducing the financial burden.
If you fall into either of these categories, we’re here to help. We accept NHS-funded patients, so if you qualify for these exemptions, visit your local practice for your free NHS sight test and let us guide you on the next steps for vision care and eyewear.
The Cost of Glasses and NHS Vouchers
For those needing spectacles, here’s what you can expect to pay and how an NHS voucher can make a difference:
- NHS Optical Voucher: The voucher amount depends on your prescription and the type of glasses you need. It provides a discount on glasses or contact lenses, reducing the cost significantly with free frame and lens options available for most prescriptions.
- Private Spectacle Prices: A complete set of glasses can vary widely in price, typically starting from around £99 for standard frames and lenses. Other options are available so speak to a member of our helpful team for more information.
If you’re in the NHS optical voucher group, you’ll be able to apply this voucher towards any frame and lenses, making quality eyewear more affordable.
Lens and Frame Upgrades: NHS vs. Private Options
Sometimes it’s worth considering an upgrade to your lenses or frame materials for enhanced durability, better aesthetics, or improved vision.
- NHS Voucher Upgrades: If you’re using an NHS Optical voucher, you may still choose to upgrade to higher-quality lenses and/or frames. We offer affordable options for patients looking to get the most out of their glasses.
- Private Upgrades: For those paying privately, we have an extensive range of lens and material upgrades, including anti-reflective coatings, scratch-resistant lenses, and lightweight frames. Pricing for these upgrades varies so make sure you speak to a member of our team to find out more.
Special Offers for Non-Exempt Patients
Not everyone qualifies for NHS eye care support, but we still have offers to make eyewear more affordable for everyone:
- Complete Spectacle Packages: Competitively priced complete glasses packages for non-exempt patients with options to fit a wide range of budgets and requirements.
- Special Offers: Ask your local practice for any seasonal offers or discounts.
For Children: Free Spectacles and an Extra Pair Offer
We’re passionate about children’s eye health, which is why we offer an extra pair package for kids. With this special offer, children can receive a free pair of glasses through the NHS, and from just £29* parents can add a spare pair for peace of mind. This means children get a backup pair at a competitive price, helping them to keep seeing clearly, no matter where they are or what they’re doing. (*exclusions apply)
